Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation
Physiotherapy and rehabilitation arose with the goal to restore the functional loss in patients. Longer life span, infectious diseases and wars led to emerging of increased number of disabled individuals. Physical therapy and rehabilitation has become a preferential professional area according to outcomes provided by scientific and technological advance in field of preventive health services and therapeutic outlook.
Education in the field of physical therapy and rehabilitation started by 2006-2007 academic term, as a newly established department in the School of Health Sciences. The school was then renamed to Faculty of Health Sciences in 2015, beside other three divisions under the same roof. Postgraduate education within the Master of Science program has started by Fall semester in 2013-2014 academic educational period; followed by PhD program, run by Spring semester 2018. Our revised educational program contains courses of basic medical sciences, clinical sciences and as well as professional applications in the field of practice and planning the physical therapy. Educational planning was also performed under the criteria for integration into Bologna process, and also contains courses of research methodology and clinical practice. After successful graduation students obtain the diploma and rights for professional practice of physical therapy as a “Physiotherapist”.
In cases of limitation and threatening of movements and functionality, physiotherapists serve in various fields with preventive and therapeutic approach for increasing the patients’ quality of life and their levels of independency.
Fields of practice for physiotherapists are increasing in number and variety. Common practice areas could be mentioned as private and state hospitals, nursing homes, sports clubs, rehabilitation centers, health centers, centers providing health care and treatment at home. Additional post-graduate education also allows academic practice as a holder of MSc and PhD degrees.
